Illegitimate son of the 3rd Duke of Hamilton who made his military career with the Royal Scots. The regiment was commanded by his half-brother, the 1st Earl of Orkney - Abercromby served as his aide-de-camp (1704-c.1709). Elected unanimously as MP for Dysart Burghs at a by-election through family intervention. Abercromby voted with the Court to solicit favour from the Duke of Marlborough. Did not seek re-election in 1710. Left politics and appointed by the Tories as town major of Dunkirk (1712). Died at his home in Charing Cross 1724.
