Elected at by-election as MP for Lanarkshire on interest of the Dukes of Douglas and Hamilton, with the support of the Duke of Argyll and Robert Dundas of Arniston. Re-elected 1761 though without patronage of Argyll and Duke of Douglas, both of whom had died. Voted with the Government, and on occasion with the Opposition. Defeated in subsequent elections. Died 1777.
