Merchant-contractor who supplied the army in Scotland, Flanders and Germany. Ambitions led to seek a seat in Parliament. Secured seat as MP for Linlithgow Burghs (1747) through bribery. Unseated the following year on allegations of corruption. Did not re-enter Parliament until the death of Argyll, securing seat as MP for Newcaslte-under-Lyme (1762-68), Edinburgh (1768-80, 1781) and Richmond (1780-March 1781). Died 1781.
