Called to the bar 1715. Elected MP for Linlithgowshire with backing of Lore Hopetoun (attached to the Duke of Roxburghe). Did not stand for re-election in 1727. Returned to Parliament, supporting the new Administration after Walpole's fall. Voted for Hanoverians (1742). Defeated in the next by-election. Died 1762.
