Took MA at the University of Edinburgh at age 14. Originally a minister in the Church of Scotland, he also held the Chair of Divinity at the University of Glasgow. In London, 1670s-1680s, but fled to Dutch Republic to escape charges of treason for anti-Catholic agitation. Returned to England with William and Mary, and became Bishop of Salisbury, 1689. Wrote 'History of the Restoration' and 'History of His Own Time'.
