Elected MP for Peeblesshire in 1732. Involved in a double return with Murray, Alexander (London) 1 in 1734 election. On petition, Murray withdrew, leaving seat with Nasmyth. Voted with the Administration. Retired in 1741. Amateur botanist of some repute. Died 1779.
