Descended from long line of merchants and shipowners in Dundee who made his fortune in the West Indies. Burgess in Glasgow, holding other offices in Dundee. Involved in local politics, though first concerns were material rather than political. Returned for Perth Burghs. Re-elected in 1713 and classed as a Tory. Retired from Parliament after the Hanoverian succession, and seems to have withdrawn from local affairs. Died c.1733.
