Member of the Merchant Taylors' Company (1681). Co-founder of the Bank of England (1694), and of the Company of Scotland (1695). Accompanied first expedition of Isthmus of Darien (1698). Lived for a time in New York. Supported Anglo-Scottish Union (1707), and elected MP for Dumfriesshire (1708), although denied his seat.
