Descended from long line of political leaders though did not seat in the Scottish parliament. Elected MP for Roxburghshire (1708) with support of Alexander Douglas. Listed as a Court Whig. Seems to have joined the opposition upon his return in the 1710 election. Stood unopposed in 1713 and classed as a Hanoverian. Did not stand for 1715 election though returned to Roxburghshire seat in 1726. Duel prevented him from taking his seat and he was declared an outlaw. Fled to Holland. Received a royal pardon in 1727 who retired to his Scottish estates. Died 1764.
