Called to the bar in 1715. Success due to close associated with the Duke of Argyll. Elected MP for Roxburghshire (1722) but vacated his seat when appointed lord of session (as Lord Minto, 1726-66). Appointed lord of justiciary (1733-66) and lord. justice clerk 1763-66. Died 1766.
