Active military career, rising through the ranks. Cultivated connection with Lieutenant-General Hon. Charles Rosse and the Duke of Marlborough. Elected MP for Tain (Northern) Burghs. Frequently absent from Parliament to join army. Publicly aligned himself with the Whigs after 1712. Remained loyal to the Administration through long parliamentary career. Attachment to Lord Walpole led him to forfeit his seat to the interests of Lord Ilay in 1741. Killed at the battle of Falkirk (1746).
