Professional soldier who retired from active service in 1717. Scottish MP for Wigtownshire (1702-7), acting in conjunction with interest of the Duke of Queensbury. Selected to attend the first Parliament of Great Britain. MP for Wigtownshire but difficult to ascertain loyalties. Frequently absent owing to military obligations. Moved into Opposition c.1712, though listed as a Hanoverian (Whig) in 1713 list. Closely connected with the Duke of Argyll. Retired from politics in 1727. Died 1748.
