Father had been executed on charge of high treason under suspicion of involvement of Rye House Plot. Raised in Holland between 1684 and the Revolution (1688). Parliamentary career began in Scotland, playing a significant role in the Union debates. Ensured his selection among the Squadrone representatives to the first Parliament of Great Britain (1707). MP for Berwickshire (1708-34) as a Whig. Enjoyed great involvement in parliament, despite periods of hearing loss. Supported Hanoverian succession and awarded with appointment to the Admiralty Board. Left as MP in 1734 and retired to a spiritual life. Died at Oxford 1738.
