Educated at St Leonard's College, St Andrews and at Edinburgh, studying law at Leiden. Admitted to Lincoln's Inn (1707) though does not seem to have been called to the English bar. Participated in English society but returned to Scotland in 1713. Admitted an advocate and had a fruitful law career - including teaching and publications. Taken ill in 1737 and died at Alnwick, Northumberland whilst travelling to Bath.
