Son of prosperous shopkeeper in herring port of Cromarty. Attended the local school and at 16 migrated to London. Worked in a counting-house but was recalled to Scotland the following year on account of his father's death. Returned to Scotland and became a successful merchant, which helped to revive local industry. Died at his home in Cromarty (1800).
