Graduated from Glasgow University (1738) with background in classical literature and history and an enthusiasm for the antique. Travelled on the Continent before settling in London in 1751. Initially made his living as a portraitist. Continually travelled between London and the Continent, participating in excavations throughout Italy in the 1770s. Became central to artistic life in Rome through his painting and archaeological activities. Died at Rome in 1798.
