Little known about earlier life but had become a successful bookseller in the Strand by the 1760s. Retained strong connections with his native Scotland, undertaking sixteen tours within twenty-three years (beginning in 1764). Some of his journeys around Scotland, including visits to the Highlands, were published. Became a known expert on the possibilities for fishing - not only asked to speak at the Highland Society of London (1786) but also gave advice to a House of Commons committee. Died at Dalkeith in 1790.
