Received education at Inverness grammar school. Moved to London to work in a merchant house. Whilst there, divided his time between London and San Lucar de Barrameda, Andalusia. Joined navy when war broke out between Britain and Spain. Settled in South Carolina where he joined the militia. Gained reputation in American-Indian relations, being appointed British Indian superintendent for Indian affairs (c.1756). Died in Florida (1779).
