Went from Edinburgh to work with Robert Adam. Travelled the continent and returned to England in 1763, continuing to work in Adams' London office. Gradually began to practice in his own right - gained a premium from the Society of Arts (1765) and from 1766 exhibited regularly architectural and decorative works both at the Society of Arts and at the Royal Academy. By 1770s made his career as an author, engraver and publisher of architectural books. Lived in Great Titchfield Street and through work maintained contact with other Scots.
