Apprenticed to a house painter in Edinburgh before moving to London. Joined the Great Queen Street Academy, governed by Sir Godfrey Kneller. Returned to Edinburgh and from there travelled to Italy and Bermuda. Eventually settled in Boston where he died in 1751.
