Took to the seas at the age of twelve. Became a lieutenant in 1734. Made master and commander (1743). Lost his right arm in battle.Rose to captaincy in 1740s. In 1750, compelled to approach the Admiralty, seeking a pension through royal favour. Had to make repeated petitions before application was accepted. Claims were raised in House of Commons and case helped establish the principle that captains too old or infirm to serve when they reached the top of the seniority list would receive a pension.
