Information in biography of his son, John Cleveland.
First naval command (1692). Participated in capture of Gibraltar and battle of Malaga (1704). Appointed ‘Commander in Chief of the Ships on the Coast of Norway' (1716). As reward for his long service, became controller of the storekeeper's accounts at the Navy Office, holding the post until his pensioned retirement in 1732. Died at estate of Tapeley Park in Westleigh, near Bideford, Devon (1735).
