Styled 6th earl of Wemyss and known as Lord Elcho. Educated at Winchester College (1734 to 1738) and at the military academy at Angers. Travelled to Rome but returned to England in 1741. Loyal to the house of Stuart; went to France as part of the Jacobite cause. Sent to Scotland (1745) where he joined Prince Charles Edward in Edinburgh. Joined Jacobite army, and despite defeat, fled to France where he died in 1787.
