Examined for settlement, 13 September 1740. Associate of Matthewson, William, whom he accompanied begging from Sunderland to Ravenglass, via Workington and Whitehaven. Previously worked as a hired servant in Edinburgh and Thurso. Worked in England as a packman selling 'divers Sorts of Goods, such as Tea, Brandy, and Pepper', but stopped after he lost some £25. Reason for being in Sunderland in 1740 unstated, although possibly related to coal industry.
