William Matthewson, who says that he was born at Inverness, and about 6 years ago lived for a year and a half as hired servant to Jonathan Bailey of Kinghorn, Fife, vintner; thence unemployed to Cambridge-shire, and later to London, where he says the Lord Mayor gave him a pass but cannot produce it, thence about 2 years ago to Sunderland "where he worked at the Keels, and going Some Voyages to Sea"; was wrecked off Helfort Holland on the ship Hope Capt. Dyton, 100 tons, last July, and got back to Sunderland two months ago aboard Francis Walker's ship bound from Rotterdam to Sunderland, since when he has had no job and has had to beg; has begged his way from Sunderland to Workington, thence Whitehaven begging for nearly two months, thence Ravenglass where the Muncaster constable arrested him with Boid, John as they were tramping to Liverpool together.
