2nd duke of Argyll (1701). Entered the army (1694), and rose to become a senior general of the duke of Marlborough, with whom he shared a rivalry. Commissioner to the Scottish Parliament (1705-1706), where he pushed for union. Made earl of Greenwich (1705), later promoted to duke (1719). Left the army (1710), and entered Westminster politics as a Whig. Led response to 1715 Jacobite rising, and commanded at battle of Sheriffmuir. Found favour under George I, but lost influence under Walpole ministry.
