Called to the bar (1738), and appointed attorney-general of South Carolina (1731). Sat in colonial assembly (1739-1745). Returned to Britain (1744) and acted as informal South Carolinian agent in London. Wrote two pamphlets on American affairs. MP for Clackmannanshire (1761-1768), but worked more in American interests. Based in Clackmannanshire from c.1758.
