3rd earl of Breadalbane (1752). Envoy to Denmark (1720-1729); MP for Saltash (1727-1734) and Orford (1741-1746), when he supported Walpole administration. Lord of the Admiralty (1741-1742). Scottish representative peer (1752-1768 and 1774-1780). Lord chief justice south of the Trent (1756-1765). Keeper of the privy seal in Scotland (1765-1766). Appointed vice-admiral of Scotland (1776).
