Graduated Edinburgh 1652 and afterwards migrated to England. Became Deputy Treasurer with the Fleet under the Duke of York (1665). Appointed Judge-Advocate to the Fleet (1671). Employed by Charles II for various missions to the Continent, including to court at Lisbon. Made Secretary to the Commission which was appointed for executing the office of Lord High Admiral in England (1683). Buried in St George’s Chapel, Windsor (1684)
