First lord Kinloss and first Baron Bruce of Kinloss. Educated at St Andrews University, graduated MA 1571. Made career as a lawyer in Scotland. Matters of state which were important to the king were entrusted to Bruce who travelled on three embassies to England (1594, 1598 and 1601). Accompanied King James to England and was naturalized as an English subject. Worked for the crown until his death, being made master of the rolls. Continued legal career in form of legal administration. Died 1611 and was buried in the Rolls Chapel in Chancery Lane, London
