Second Earl of Marchmont. Studied civil law at University of Utrecht whilst in exile with family in the Netherlands. Changed name to Campbell upon marriage. Returned to Scotland and entered politics. Supported Hanoverian side in 1715 Jacobite rising. Appointed envoy and ambassador to court of Copenhagen (1716-21). Held office of lord clerk register of Scotland (1716-33). Returned to England and was sworn of the privy council (1726) and elected one of Scottish representative peers (1727). Admitted to Inner Temple, 6 April 1731, called to the bar, 28 May 1731, and admitted to the bench, 20 May 1742. Died in London (1740) and buried in Edinburgh.
