Daughter of William Maxwell medical practitioner of Kirkcudbright and Elizabeth Hairstanes. After he father's death, Willielma's mother married Charles Erskine, Lord Alva which allowed her to marry into the peerage. Spent time at Great Sugnall, Stafforshire and befriended the Hill family living in nearby Hawkstone Park, Shropshire. The Hills were Calvinistic Methodists and Lady Glenorchy added Methodist principles to her Presbyterianism. She encouraged evangelical preaching and restored/re-opened churches across Scotland. Encountered problems with the presbytery as wanted to retain appointment of the minister of one of her churches. Let to frustration, coupled with poor health, Lady Glenorchy (widowed 1771) left for England in 1776. She settled in Exmouth and continued to open churches across England, with Scottish ministers. At an unspecified date, Lady Glenorchy returned to Scotland, died in Edinburgh on 17 July 1786 and was buried in her chapel.
