Elected MP for Orkney and Shetland on interest of the Earl of Morton (1754-68). Absent from Parliament for long periods due to naval duty, spending a great deal of time overseas in America or the West Indies. Returned to England in 1762, remaining for a year. Posted back to the West Indies though returned to seat in Parliament by 1765. Seems to have voted with the Administration, though voted with Opposition on the repeal of the Stamp Act. Sold his parliamentary seat to the Dundas family in 1766. Devoted himself to naval career, died 1787.
