10th earl of Angus. Travelled to France 1577 and converted to Catholicism which became a source of friction between the Earl and his family and with the government. Though remained a public servant in Scotland throughout 1590s was ordered by Privy Council to leave Scotland. Migrated to France but travelled via London (1608-9). Was refused a final interview with James VI. Died in Paris.
