Examined as a vagrant in the North Riding of Yorkshire, 29 September 1742. Apprehended after about 1 month in England, en route to London. Husbandman until age of about 20, after which he enlisted. A soldier for about 10 years; dismissed for ‘want of size’, but transferred to another regiment, in which he was posted to Gibraltar. Lost left hand in an accident, after which he was discharged. Army pensioner for about 2 years. Married Mary Lademan, of Bernard Castle, about 18 months previously.
