Had participated at court since 1585. Was a great favourite of the king and therefore travelled to England on James VI ascension. Captain of the yeoman guard (1603), Viscount Fentoun (1606), Knight of the Order of the Garter (1615), First Earl of Kellie (1619). Despite advances at court, held no real influence and faced financial troubles. Feared for his future should the king die, and indeed, on death of king in 1625 quickly lost all authority at court. Able to retain captainship of the guard until 1632. Died in London 1639 though buried in Pittenweem, Fife
