Only son of Gilmour, Charles. Served in the 1st Foot Guards before entering politics. Returned unopposed as MP for Edinburghshire. Joined the Opposition. Sought military appointments through the crown, unsuccessfully. Did receive the lucrative Green Cloth Appointment - Clerk comptroller, Board of Green Cloth 1765-75 and Clerk 1775-9.
