Second son of Francis Grant, 1st baronet of Cullen. Entered at Middle Temple, 7 February 1720, but returned to Scotland and was admitted to the faculty of advocates (1722). Appointed solicitor-general for Scotland (1737-42) and made Lord Advocate (1746-54). Upon death of cousin Grant, William filled seat as MP for Elgin Burghs. Raised to Lord of session as Lord Prestongrange (1754-64). Died 1764.
