Apprenticed to Mr Morgan, East India merchant in London (c.1692), where he married (although wife claims they married later). Returned to Edinburgh (c.1703). Moved to Breda to live with father-in-law (c.1713 - wife claims c.1719). After several years in the Dutch Republic, sought to return to Glasgow by sea (c.1732), but ship sprung a leak and forced to land at Goodwin Sands. Wandered through London, Bath, Bristol, Wales and Lancashire in search of relief and a means to return home.
