Son of Sir Robert Dalrymple but on succeeding to Bargany estates changed surname to Hamilton. Called to the bar in 1735. Stood as MP for Wigtown Burghs on interest of the Earl of Stair, though compromised with Lord Galloway to secure his seat. Elected MP for Wigtown Burghs (1754-61 and 1762-68). Also sat for Wigtownshire (1761-62). In 1755 Hamilton followed Pitt into Opposition and supported his Administration. Later supported both Bute and Grenville, following the latter into Opposition. Died 1796.
