Close political associate of the Earl/Marquess of Annandale. Entered Scottish parliament and voted with the Court until Annandale was disaffected in which Johnstone voted with the opposition. Returned for Dumfries Burghs (1708-10) on Annandale's interests. Successful at by-election for Dumfriesshire (1713-22) and also for Dumfries Burghs, therefore sat both seats. Prepared to co-operate with Jacobites on matters of Scottish interests. Re-elected for Dumfriesshire (1715) and supported the Administration. Died 1727.
