Head of one of most powerful of the Highland clans. Elected MP for Inverness-shire with support of cousin Lord Lovat and Forbes, Duncan. Consistently voted against the Administration as part of the 'Duke of Argyll's Gang'. Raised to Jacobite peerage (1716). Helped Government during 1745 and forced to flee to Skye. Returned to Parliament in 1747 but retired in 1754, moving away from his Jacobite clansman who considered him a betrayer of the cause. Died 1772.
