Examined for settlement in St Martin in the Fields, 18 November 1731. Born in Portmoak, Fife, where he trained as an ostler. Came to London with his first wife, Elizabeth, c.1695, and in c.1704 hired himself as hostler to Mr Hambledon, keeper of the Nagg's Head Inn on Vive Street. Served about a year, paid 28s per year plus food and lodging. Lodged in Bedford Bury for about 26 years. Elizabeth died, c.1722, and he married his second wife, Jane, in a Catholic Chapel in St James parish. She died c.1725. Left Bedford Bury, c.1729, and worked for a time in Newcastle, but returned to Bedford Bury about a week ago.
