Served in French army (1630), but returned to Scotland to fight in Covenanting armies (1639). Opposed Montrose's rising (1644-1645), but gradually moved towards a more conservative position from 1648. Supported Charles II while he was in Scotland (1650-1651). Exiled (1652), but returned with Charles II upon Restoration and made 1st earl of Middleton (1660). Commissioner to the Scottish Parliament (1661-1662). Governor of Rochester (1663-1667) and lieutenant-general of the Kent militia (1667). Governor of Tangiers (1668).
