Enjoyed patronage of his uncle the first Duke of Rothes. Not particularly involved in politics before the Revolution. By 1689 was a strong supporter of the Prince of Orange. Attended first parliament of Great Britain (1707) and was token Scot to second the nomination of the outgoing speaker. Also held position as a Scottish treasury commissioner. Returned in 1708 (until 1710) as MP for Ayrshire where he supported the Duke of Queensberry's court party. Appears to have left Westminster and returned to Scotland in 1710, with son John replacing him.
