Called to the bar in 1739. Went on Grand Tour of Europe and continued studied on Continent before returning to Scotland in 1742. Elected MP for Renfrewshire. Re-elected 1747 and 1754. Retired from Parliament in 1761 when he became a baron of the Exchequer of Scotland. Died 1776.
