Hereditary sheriff, Selkirk 1708-c.1734. Elected MP for Linlithgow Burghs (1725-34) at a by-election and was re-elected the following year. Voted with the Administration unitl 1734 when he went into opposition. Resigned sheriffdom to be able to stand for county seat of Skelkirkshire - elected MP (1734-53). Remained in Opposition until Walpole's fall, thereafter voting with the Government. Died 1753.
