Minister of Ellon (1659) and Tron Kirk, Edinburgh (1663). Chaplain to the king (1668). Dean of Edinburgh (1672). Bishop of Galloway (1674). Archbishop of Glasgow (1687). Deposed at the Revolution (1688), after which he fled Scotland. After stints at Leiden and Hamburg, he was in London (1695-1696), during which he kept a well-known journal. Returned to Edinburgh soon afterwards, and became a champion of the Scots Episcopalians.
