Staunch Presbyterian. Professional soldier who entered Scottish politics, sitting for Renfrewshire (1700-7) and voting with the Opposition. Voted for the Court in the Union parliament and attended first Parliament of Great Britain. Failed to find a seat in the 1708 election but returned for Renfrewshire in 1710. Re-elected in 1713 and consistently voted with the Administration. Defeated in 1722 election. Died 1735.
