Chosen to the first Parliament of 1707. Elected to parliament as MP for Aberdeen Burghs 1710. Unseated in 1711 following an alleged incompetence on the part of his legal council. Recovered a place in Parliament through a by-election for Forfarshire in 1716, as a Whig. Remained a consistent supporter of Whig governments until his death in 1732.
